Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the prevention and correction of the disharmony of the teeth, the bite and the position of the jaws.
A good orthodontic treatment allows you to enjoy a beautiful smile and a healthy mouth, but this is not enough if it is not accompanied by proper daily oral hygiene. Following the advice of the dentist and using the right products will guarantee the success of the treatment: a dental alignment that will facilitate better hygiene and, thus, a healthier mouth in the medium to long term.
Holders of fixed appliances should pay more attention to their oral hygiene, since they are the ones that can present the most common problems of orthodontics: dental biofilm accumulation, gingivitis, enamel demineralization, bad breath, etc.
Due to these factors, a complete oral hygiene must be carried out, using the specific products for orthodontic carriers and, above all, not forgetting the interproximal cleaning.
For good oral hygiene, it is important to choose a specific brush, specially designed for fixed orthodontics.
Mouth cleaning with fixed and removable orthodontics
There are different ways to maintain good hygiene:
Use of the toothbrush: use a specific brush. This should be placed perpendicular to the surface of the tooth, making a rotating movement in small circles. You have to tilt the brush to clean all surfaces of the tooth. In addition, it is very important to review the area between the bracket and the gum, since it is where a large amount of food accumulates.
Interproximal brush: complement the hygiene with the use of other instruments to help clean the areas between the arch and the tooth, since that is where the brush does not reach. Therefore, the use of an interproximal brush is necessary. Another tool that could do the same function would be the oral irrigator, since it releases pressurized water to clean these areas.
Cleaning the appliance: in the case of removable orthodontics, each time the appliance is removed from the mouth it should be cleaned. For this it is necessary to use cleaning tablets (its mechanism of action releases small bubbles that dissolve slowly, guaranteeing a lasting cleaning and a protective effect of orthodontic appliances). Finally, before storage, it should be dried well, and whenever we are going to put it on it is advisable to moisten it.
